Echo Tracer past goed in een tempo- of controledeck dat tegenstanders probeert te verstoren en tegelijkertijd de aanwezigheid op het bord behoudt, omdat het vermogen om een wezen terug te geven aan de hand van de eigenaar het momentum van het spel in jouw voordeel kan doen veranderen. Er zijn echter aantoonbaar sterkere opties, zoals Snapcaster Mage, die niet alleen een lichaam biedt, maar je ook in staat stelt krachtige instant- of tovenarij-spreuken vanaf je kerkhof opnieuw te spelen, waardoor je algemene strategie wordt verbeterd. Hoewel Echo Tracer effectief kan zijn, kan het situationele nut en de afhankelijkheid van morph de speelbaarheid ervan beperken in vergelijking met meer veelzijdige kaarten, zodat het een nichespel in specifieke kaartspellen kan zien in plaats van een wijdverbreide acceptatie.
