De Opal Palace-kaart is vooral handig in Commander-decks die afhankelijk zijn van het meerdere keren casten van hun commandant tijdens het spel, omdat hierdoor extra +1/+1 counters op de Commander kunnen worden geplaatst elke keer dat deze wordt uitgebracht. Er zijn echter potentieel betere kaarten, zoals Command Tower of Reflecting Pool, die veelzijdigere mana-fixeeropties bieden en die over het algemeen worden beschouwd als nietjes in Commander-decks, waardoor het minder waarschijnlijk is dat Opal Palace wordt gespeeld in competitieve of geoptimaliseerde decks.
