Michael, piloting Mono Blue Belcher, the most famous combo deck in the Modern format, won the title after defeating Spaniard Francisco Sánchez by 3-0. Francisco played Azorius Control, surprising the audience and the event coverage by getting so far with one of the format's oldest archetypes. Sánchez's list ran the classic lock combo with Orim's Chant and Isochron Scepter, which had not appeared at a high-level competitive table for at least 20 years.

But Counterspell and Francisco's other answers were unable to hold Michael in the first two games, and the third game was essentially dominated by one card: Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student, run by the champion in the first turn of the game to accumulate extra value in a game of attrition, eventually culminating in an activation of her Planeswalker emblem, making Michael draw half of his own deck and, thus, accumulate enough answers to finish the combo over his opponent's disruption.
