Magic: The Gathering lead designer Mark Rosewater shared last Monday (29) Wizards of the Coast's decision to retire the game's Masters and Remastered Magic: The Gathering sets.

When answering a question on his blog about a possible Remastered for 2026, Rosewater mentioned that the cut of these expansions is due to the decreasing amount of releases per year and that they may return in the future.

“We are choosing to retire Masters sets for now. That doesn’t mean they can never return, but part of cutting back on the number of releases was finding things to trim.”

- Mark Rosewater

Masters sets have been part of Magic: The Gathering since Modern Masters in 2013 and have been a major source of reprints for staples and powerful cards for eternal formats without having to go through Standard again. In subsequent years, Wizards of the Coast complemented these releases with Remastered sets, bringing iconic staples with special treatments from a given plane and/or set combination.

Today, most card reprints occur through special slots in the Play Boosters and Collector Boosters of Magic: The Gathering expansions, such as cards from Final Fantasy Through the Ages or Strixhaven's Mystical Archives, or in the preconstructed Commander decks of each release.
