Tether Technician would mainly benefit a limited or casual Rakdos discard, madness, or graveyard deck, where discarding a card can generate value instead of being a pure two-for-one loss; however, paying five mana for a creature that merely offers reach and an optional two damage is far too inefficient for most Constructed formats, especially if its power and toughness are modest. Flametongue Kavu is generally a much better red alternative because it costs four mana, has a strong 4/2 body, and deals four damage to a creature without requiring you to discard, while Bonecrusher Giant is also more efficient and flexible at a lower mana cost. Tether Technician should probably see play only in Limited, budget decks, or a dedicated discard-synergy deck where the discard clause is valuable; otherwise, it is not powerful enough to justify a deck slot.
