As the name suggests, Foundations aims to create the foundations that will solidify Standard in the coming years. Just like the Core Sets from the era started by Magic 2010, the expansion brings 50% new cards to the game and 50% reprints, including some historical pieces from the game.

The new cards and the edition's design philosophy seek to imagine "what an set called Magic: The Gathering would be like", with abilities and effects that reference old staples of the game, as well as having five planeswalkers, which weren't revealed yet.

In the historical context, Foundations seeks to occupy the space that the famous enumerated Editions of the game (such as the 10th Edition) had, with a slower rotation, this time extending over up to two Standard seasons.
