Mercadian Atlas, Artifact, designed by Dan Frazier first released in Oct, 1999 in the set Mercadian Masques. It's currently being selled by the minimum price of 4.00.
A control deck that aims to limit its land drops each turn would benefit from using Mercadian Atlas, as it provides card advantage without the need to play additional lands. However, there are better options available such as Azor's Gateway, which provides a more immediate benefit by allowing you to filter your draws and potentially ramp into bigger spells. Mercadian Atlas could see play in specific landfall or land denial strategies, but its effectiveness may vary depending on the overall game plan of the deck.

It only checks if you played a land. Putting a land onto the battlefield by using an effect of another card does not count as “playing a land”.
