Edit Article

Mono White Heroic has been absent from Pauper for some time, a victim of the power creep the format has experienced in recent years. However, Skyward Spider has reignited interest in the archetype in recent weeks, establishing an updated version of it using the new card alongside Steel of the Godhead.

The Decklist

Skyward Spider is the most recent addition to Heroic and the main reason to revisit the archetype. Besides the built-in protection, the new card gains Flying with any enchantment cast on it.

Lagonna-Band Trailblazer blocks any Aggro well for just one mana and grows considerably with each Aura cast on it, easily dodging Galvanic Blast.

Sacred Cat has Lifelink on its own and requires two interactions to be dealt with. It's excellent against Aggro, but can also punish opponents who spend too much removal on it.

Deftblade Elite is a great way to get unwanted creatures out of the way, especially if enchanted with Cartouche of Solidarity or Hyena Umbra, which guarantee First Strike to deal with small threats, and we can even resolve larger bombs if we add Ethereal Armor to the equation.

Ethereal Armor is the core of enchantments; stacking each of them on a creature with Armor will often lead to situations where one or two combats are enough to end the game, especially when combined with some protection spell.

Hyena Umbra offers First Strike and a decent power boost, along with a way to protect the enchanted creature from Cast Down and other non-exile removal.

Sentinel’s Eyes grants Vigilance and can be reused from the graveyard if we exile some cards.

Cartouche of Solidarity protects our strategy from sacrifice effects like Tithing Blade. Nowadays, some decks can play around it with Extract a Confession, but ideally, we want to win before the opponent has that opportunity.

Spirit Link guarantees a life gain trigger, which differs from Lifelink and therefore stacks multiple times and can even accompany a creature with Lifelink to gain more life against Aggro.

Steel of the Godhead has a combo with Skyward Spider to guarantee +2/+2, Lifelink, and a clear path to attack. On other creatures, +1/+1 with Lifelink isn't very impressive for Magic Symbol 2Magic Symbol W, but it works on some matchups.

Benevolent Blessing protects our creature from removal and blockers, with the bonus of not removing other enchantments if we need to assign white as the color.

Emerge Unscathed isn't an aura and doesn't have the same benefits as Benevolent Blessing, but it protects a creature at instant speed and guarantees two unimpeded attacks with a single card.

Sideboard

Standard Bearer doubles in this list as a magnet against spot removal, in addition to being an essential card in mirrors, Elves, or against Bogles.

Thraben Charm is the most efficient card we have in the Sideboard. It can function as removal, but its main role is as graveyard hate and interaction against troublesome enchantments.

The extra Spirit Link in the sideboard provides advantages against Mono Red Rally and Madness Burn. It can be used against other Aggro decks, but it's not a good side-in against Faeries.

Obsidian Acolyte and Crimson Acolyte could be a complete Mask of Law and Grace set, but I prefer more creatures in the list that can protect themselves and be enchanted with Ethereal Armor.

Shield of Duty and Reason works as an extra layer of protection against blue and green decks. Using it at the right time against Mono Blue Terror or Faeries can often guarantee a win.
