Starting with Edge of Eternities, Legendary Vehicles will be eligible as Commanders

Wizards of the Coast revealed this afternoon (12) a rules change for theCommander format, allowing legendary vehicles to be eligible as choices for Commanders starting with the release of Edge of Eternities, scheduled for August 1st.

Announced at MagicCon Vegas, the change was accompanied by a video from Good Morning Magic explaining the design team's philosophy behind the change. In it, host Gavin Verhey explains that they wanted to make new Spacecraft cards eligible as Commanders, and the best way to accomplish this was to make any card that can transform into a creature and has a power and toughness box eligible, including legendary vehicles.

This change was also planned for possible future innovations in Magic design, such as, for example, a type of enchantment that transforms into a creature with vehicle-like properties. Verhey also noted that the announcement was planned for September 2024, but due to the controversy surrounding the Commander format's Banned and Restricted update at the time, they decided to postpone this announcement to a later date.

Spacecrafts are a new artifact subtype created for Edge of Eternities. Mechanically, they function similarly to vehicles, but with a few specific differences: they have the Station ability, where the player can tap a creature to add charge counters to the artifact equal to its power. When a certain number of counters are added, the artifact transforms into a creature. Players can only activate this ability as a sorcery.
