Introduction

Are you building a deck with blue Magic Symbol u and want to add a few spot removals? If so, you've come to the right place!

What most players fear when they're playing against monoblue decks is Counterspell, but that's not the only trap these decks can hide among their 99 cards.

If you've ever felt personally victimized by a Cyclonic Rift, you certainly understand what I mean.

In this article, we hand-picked the best blue spot removals to help beginners and veterans alike find the best cards for their decks. Besides greatly improving your deck, the spells we selected also show that blue is a lot more than just Counterspell.

Before we go into our list, check out below how we selected these cards.

How We Picked the Best Blue Spot Removals

To select these cards, we analyzed how much each spell costs, their speed, versatility, and how popular they are in EDHRec (after all, the community is always right).

Unlike red spot removalslink outside website and green spot removalslink outside website, blue can deal with creatures pretty well. Some blue cards even "donate" creatures to opponents in exchange for the permanents they lost.

Alongside other cards, like the iconic Counterspell and blue card drawlink outside website, these removals will stand out in your hand and will be real threats for your opponents.

Top 10 Best Blue Spot Removals for Your Deck

10. Hydroblast

Let's start with a classic: Hydroblast!

This card costs one blue mana Magic Symbol u and can be used in two ways: you can either counter a target red spell or destroy a red permanent. The last effect is what interests us.

Hydroblast deserved a spot on our list because it destroys any red permanent and also offers you different modes to pick from. It is a classic.

9. Blue Elemental Blast

Just like Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast is quite simple: it makes any opponent that plays red frustrated.

It does exactly the same thing as the card above, and is an option if you also want to play counters or other cards that destroy red permanents too.

8. Polymorph

Polymorph is a sorcery removal that destroys a target creature. Then, the player who controlled that creature reveals cards from the top of their deck until they reveal another creature. Next, they put it on their board and shuffle their deck again.

Usually, a removal like this is better on an enemy creature, but you can also target a creature you control. So, if one of your creatures loses their abilities somehow, or becomes a token, you can destroy them with Polymorph and try your luck revealing your top deck to find a better creature.

7. Blessed Reincarnation

At a first glance, Blessed Reincarnation looks a lot like Polymorph. However, when you read its effect closely, you realize it is cooler and way more useful than the card above.

It also has Rebound, so, if you cast it from your hand, you can cast it for free at the beginning of your next upkeep (who doesn't like paying for a spell once and enjoying its effect twice?).

Furthermore, it is an instant and actually exiles a card. If you need to get rid of an attacking creature, for instance, it is very useful and can save you a lot of HP.

On the other side, just like Polymorph, the opponent whose creature you exiled will be able to put another creature on their board.

6. Ravenform

If Ravenform were an instant, it would certainly be in this article's top 3, as it would be one of the best blue spot removals around.

This spell has Foretell, which lets you cast it for an alternative cost. In this case, during your turn, you'll need to exile it from your hand face down for two generic mana. From your next turn onward, you can cast this spell for only one blue mana Magic Symbol u.

Its effect lets you exile a target artifact or creature and, in exchange, it will give its controller a 1/1 Bird creature - so, not a real threat by any means!

5. Resculpt

Resculpt also exiles a target artifact or creature, but costs one mana less than Ravenform, and is an instant.

The downside is that it will give your opponent a 4/4 Elemental after you exile their permanent.

Use this spell wisely, and consider the board state before you use it.

4. Curse of the Swine

Curse of the Swine, one of Hinata, Dawn-Crowned's best friends, occupies our list's fourth place, and is one of the best blue spot removals for your Commander decks!

With this spell, you can exile X target creatures and, for each one of them, give their controller a 2/2 Boar token.

It is a great option to deal with an enemy board full of problematic creatures.

3. Rapid Hybridization

Loading icon

Rapid Hybridization is an instant that represents really well what a "spot removal" should be.

For one blue mana Magic Symbol u, you get to destroy a target creature and their controller gets a 3/3 Frog Lizard token. As it is so cheap, saving one mana to cast it on your opponent's turn or even as an answer to a play is really easy.

This spell is literally a "rapid hybridization"!

2. Pongify

Our second place is Pongify!

This spell is quite popular, so you've probably seen someone cast it in your Commander matches.

With Pongify, you get to destroy a target creature and their controller gets a 3/3 Ape token. All of that for just one blue mana Magic Symbol u, and at instant speed.

Just like Rapid Hybridization, there's no reason to not use it in your deck, considering it is cheap and fits any Commander deck with blue.

1. Reality Shift

Loading icon

Finally, we have our best blue spot removal!

Reality Shift combines all the strengths of the other spells in this article, such as its low cost and its effect, which exiles a target creature (and is annoying for any opponent).

This spell also works with the Manifest mechanic, so, after exiling the target creature, its controller gets to put the card on the top of their own deck on the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature. If that card is a creature, its controller can pay its mana cost to turn it face up.

So, unlike other cards (which only put the enemy creature on the opponent's board for free, like Polymorph), with this removal, they'll have to pay for the card's cost to put it in play. Otherwise, it will just be a 2/2 on the board.

Final Words

This is the end of another top 10 list!

Blue has many options to interact with the enemy board, just like other colors, like Chaos Warp and Beast Within, but it has its own personality as well.

It also includes spells that are incredibly popular in EDHRec. I'd reckon they're even more staples than certain counter spells (Counterspell, Negate, Swan Song, and many others).

With a bit of work, you can build a very strong and consistent blue deck with a few of these removals.
