Edge of Eternities is coming. Magic: The Gathering's space opera expansion and the card game's last in-universe set of 2025 will be released on August 1st, bringing with it both the Standard rotation and some important new features for other formats.
From the first support for Sliver since Magic 2015, the new Cosmogoyf that interacts with exile effects like Delve, to another support for Hardened Scales with Dyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam, some of the key cards in the expansion for the format could encourage the creation of new archetypes or even introduce existing strategies.
In this article, we explore the potential of Edge of Eternities for Pioneer with five decklists running cards from the set!
Five Pioneer Decklists with Edge of Eternities
Temur Slivers
Thrumming Hivepool is the first direct support for Slivers that Pioneer has received since its inception, and it's good enough for us to experiment with lists featuring one of Magic's most popular creature types in the format.
The Sliver pool is very short in the format because it's basically limited to cards released in M15, with a dozen Changelings released in Kaldheim. So we tried to add consistency in some effects and costs with Mockingbird and Glasspool Mimic, which will ideally copy Predatory Sliver to increase the power of your creatures.
Once we have Thrumming Hivepool in play—which usually requires at least three Slivers on the board—we can go all-out, as all creatures will have Double Strike and Haste. With the right combination of cards, they'll also have Flying with Galerider Sliver or Deathtouch with Venom Sliver, as well as an ability that works mechanically similar to Ward with Diffusion Sliver.
Selesnya Dyadrine Scales
Dyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam is one of the best additions +1/+1 counter decks have received in a long time. Besides scaling with the amount of mana used to cast it, the new creature has evasion and an ability that exchanges creatures' +1/+1 counters for more cards in hand and more bodies on the board, making it another reason to try, once again, to make Hardened Scales work.
In addition to the various creatures that double the number of counters we put on creatures, cards like Luminarch Aspirant and Bristly Bill, Spine Sower provide constant resources for Dyadrine to activate its ability whenever it attacks. One-drops like Experiment One and Pelt Collector can also guarantee more draws while acting as the early-game beatdown.
We also run Dromoka's Command as an interaction, and we can expand this package with Snakeskin Veil, which may be needed to protect Dyadrine or another key creature like Bristly Bill.
Metalwork Colossus
Emissary Escort can be a good backup for Metalwork Colossus decks and another wincondition alongside the archetype's main card and Simulacrum Synthesizer.
With a Leyline Axe in play, it becomes a 4/4 for that, the turn after it enters, can already have the equipment attached to it attacking for 5 with Double Strike and Trample, offering an aggressive beatdown line that lists currently lack, in addition to allowing for a combo-kill with Metalwork Colossus, Wedding Announcement, and the same Leyline Axe.
Sultai Cosmogoyf
Cosmogoyf is one of the key Edge of Eternities cards for non-rotating formats, and the best way to leverage it in Pioneer is with Delve as it can be transformed into a 7/8 for with a single Treasure Cruise.
Due to its interaction with Abhorrent Oculus and an affordable mana value, the new creature seems like an excellent complementary wincondition for Neoform decks that run two-drops to search for Oculus—after all, if we need to cast our main win condition for the mana value, the additional exile cost will make Cosmogoyf a bigger threat, and both can interact with Stubborn Denial as protection.
Gruul Temporal Velocity
Terminal Velocity is the closest we have to Through the Breach in Pioneer, and while we don't have Emrakul, The Aeons' Torn to win the game for free, another 15/15 can do the job of creating an unbeatable board position against the opponent: Worldspine Wurm.
With the spell, Worldspine Wurm will enter attacking for 15 with Trample, clear the battlefield when sacrificed, and we can organize the triggers on the stack to first clear the board and then put the 5/5 tokens into play, guaranteeing a two-turn kill similar to Parhelion II with Greasefang, Okiba Boss.
There are many ways to play with this combo, but we chose to revisit Gruul Transmogrify due to Terminal Velocity's high mana value, which requires more mana sources and ways to speed up the spell's casting with Careful Cultivation and Courier's Briefcase.
Personally, I don't know how viable this combo really is in a Metagame where even Indomitable Creativity decks struggle to fit in with the format's top contenders. It seems too slow, but maybe some player will find a more creative and consistent way to make it work.
