Een zwart controle- of midrange-deck zou baat hebben bij het gebruik van Read the Bones, omdat het kaartvoordeel oplevert door twee kaarten te trekken en door het kaartspel te filteren met scrying, ten koste van wat leven. Hoewel er andere soortgelijke kaarten zijn, zoals Sign in Blood of Night's Whisper, die het trekken van kaarten bieden zonder levensverlies, is Read the Bones nog steeds een sterke keuze vanwege de flexibiliteit bij het opzetten van toekomstige trekkingen en het mogelijk vinden van sleutelkaarten.
