About Covenant of Blood

Covenant of Blood, Sorcery, designed by Seb McKinnon first released in Jul, 2014 in the set Magic 2015 and was printed exactly in 2 different ways. It's currently being selled by the minimum price of 0.10.

A deck that focuses on utilizing a lot of creatures and generating mana efficiently would benefit from including Covenant of Blood, especially in a black-heavy deck. While Covenant of Blood can be a solid inclusion for decks that can easily convoke it out, there are potentially better options available such as Exsanguinate or Gray Merchant of Asphodel which provide similar effects with additional benefits, making Covenant of Blood less likely to see play in competitive or optimized decks.

Rules

When calculating a spell’s total cost, include any alternative costs, additional costs, or anything else that increases or reduces the cost to cast the spell. Convoke applies after the total cost is calculated. Convoke doesn’t change a spell’s mana cost or converted mana cost.

10/05/18

Because convoke isn’t an alternative cost, it can be used in conjunction with alternative costs.

When using convoke to cast a spell with in its mana cost, first choose the value for X. That choice, plus any cost increases or decreases, will determine the spell’s total cost. Then you can tap creatures you control to help pay that cost. For example, if you cast Worldsoul Colossus (a spell with convoke and mana cost ) and choose X to be 3, the total cost is . If you tap two green creatures and two white creatures, you’ll have to pay .

07/18/14

If the target permanent or player is an illegal target when Covenant of Blood tries to resolve, it won’t resolve and none of its effects will happen. You won’t gain any life. (Any creatures you tapped to cast Covenant of Blood remain tapped.)
