Boros Ruby Storm

Boros Ruby Storm is a Modern combo deck built around reducing the cost of red spells with Ruby Medallion and then chaining together cheap card-advantage spells, mana rituals, and storm payoffs. Its goal is to generate a large storm count in one turn before ending the game with Grapeshot, a large army from Empty the Warrens, or a powerful spell found through Wish.

The deck’s central engine is Ruby Medallion. Once it is in play, cards such as Wrenn’s Resolve, Reckless Impulse, and Manamorphose become dramatically more efficient, allowing the deck to see many cards while continuing to cast spells. Pyretic Ritual and Desperate Ritual provide bursts of mana, while Past in Flames lets the deck replay rituals and cantrips from the graveyard for a second explosive wave.

Ral, Monsoon Mage is another important piece: it can help filter through the deck and, after transforming into Ral, Leyline Prodigy, can provide mana and spell-copying value. Hex Magic supports the spell-heavy plan by helping turn the deck’s cheap spells into additional momentum. The white splash gives the deck valuable interaction, especially Orim’s Chant, which can protect a combo turn by preventing an opponent from casting spells, and Prismatic Ending, which answers troublesome permanents.

Wish gives the deck flexibility by accessing sideboard bullets or additional finishers. Galvanic Relay is especially useful in games where the deck cannot win immediately: it can exile a large number of cards to be played on the following turn, setting up a nearly inevitable second combo turn. Valakut Awakening can redraw an awkward hand, while lands such as Gemstone Caverns occasionally accelerate the deck when playing second.

The deck’s main strengths are explosiveness, resilience to creature removal, and strong card velocity. It can produce lethal storm turns surprisingly early, and many of its cards replace themselves or provide access to several more cards. Because it can win through either Grapeshot or Empty the Warrens, it can attack opponents from different angles. Orim’s Chant is particularly potent against interactive decks because it can force through a crucial combo turn.

Its weaknesses are inconsistency, reliance on key permanents, and vulnerability to specific hate cards. Ruby Medallion is powerful but can be removed before the combo turn, while graveyard hate can weaken Past in Flames. Effects such as Rule of Law, Deafening Silence, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, and Roiling Vortex can be difficult to beat if they remain in play. The deck can also suffer from hands containing too many rituals, too few payoffs, or insufficient mana sources. Careful sequencing is essential, since casting spells in the wrong order can leave important cards exiled, stranded in hand, or unavailable for Past in Flames.
