Introduction

“I want to build a different future than the tomorrow I see on the horizon. What kind of man am I if I don’t do everything I can to make that happen?”

- Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards

The Marvel universe is full of geniuses, but Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards stands out even among them.

Known as a brilliant strategist, this hero has appeared on several MTG cards. Today, we'll focus on Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards.

In this article, you'll find two decklists with this commander. The first focuses on token combos and pushes his card-draw ability to its limit to win through powerful interactions.

The second is an artifact deck with plenty of control tools for players who enjoy disrupting their opponents.

Let's start with the star of the article!

Commander: Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards

Reed Richards, a scientist and inventor, is considered the smartest man in the universe. He leads the Fantastic Four, a team of heroes who have become a real family.

This version of Reed is a 2/4 creature with Reach that rewards you for creating tokens with more information. In other words, card draw.

More importantly, he interacts with any token you create, whether it's a creature or not.

Creating Tokens

This list is built around combos, but you'll need ways to get them started. Reed's ability only works once you play a few other cards.

With that in mind, we've added cards that create tokens to fill the battlefield and set up the interactions we want. At worst, those tokens can protect you from enemy attacks:

The Watcher in the Water deserves a shoutout. This powerful Kraken creates 1/1 Tentacle tokens whenever you draw a card on an opponent's turn.

And when a Tentacle you control dies, it lets you untap a target Kraken and put a stun counter on up to one target nonland permanent.

Scary, isn't it?

Besides creating tokens, Alandra, Sky Dreamer will buff them based on the number of cards in your hand. This applies to Alandra and the Drakes she creates, and the fact it can create a huge +X/+X in this deck is too hard to ignore.

Dubbed the blue Scute Swarm, Homunculus Horde should fill your battlefield with, well, a great horde of wide-eyed, bloodthirsty Homunculi.

Card Draw

Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards is a powerful card draw engine in the command zone, but this deck doesn't rely on him alone.

As always, Teferi's Ageless Insight earned its place by making your extra card draws even better.

Another version of this commander, Reed Richards, Smartest Man, is also in this list. With his help, each card you draw after the first in a draw step becomes 4 cards. Good thing he also lets you keep as many cards as you want in your hand!

Straight from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe, Krang, the All-Powerful doubles all abilities triggered by drawing cards. He also gets a +1/+1 counter whenever any player draws their second card, so he grows stronger as the game goes on.

Combos

Cards like Laboratory Maniac and Jace, Wielder of Mysteries are always scary in casual tables, and for good reason: they're popular win conditions.

They're great in this list, too, but they're not your only options.

Hullbreaker Horror + Sol Ring

What's scarier at a Commander table than infinite mana?

That's exactly what this combo does. Here's how it works:

1. With Sol Ring on the battlefield, cast another spell.

2. Hullbreaker Horror triggers, returning Sol Ring from the battlefield to your hand.

3. Cast Sol Ring to trigger the Horror again, generate mana, and repeat this process for infinite mana.

Scuttletide + Ashnod's Altar + Skullclamp

1. Activate Scuttletide by paying one mana and discarding a card, and create a 0/3 Crab creature token. You'll also draw a card from your commander.

2. Attach Skullclamp to the Crab.

3. Sacrifice the token to Ashnod's Altar.

4. When the token dies, you'll draw two cards. That leaves you with some floating mana and cards to discard so you can repeat the steps above and draw cards forever.

This is when Laboratory Maniac, Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, and Psychosis Crawler shine.

The Watcher in the Water + Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards + Psychosis Crawler

This combo only works on an opponent's turn.

Loading icon

1. Use a spell or ability to draw a card at instant speed, such as Brainstorm.

2. The Watcher in the Water will interact with that and create a token.

3. Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards will interact with the token and let you draw another card.

4. Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards and The Watcher in the Water will create an infinite loop on the stack. With Psychosis Crawler, each card you draw makes each opponent lose 1 life.

So go for this combo if you have more cards in your deck than your opponents have life, or if you have your win conditions (Laboratory Maniac and Jace, Wielder of Mysteries) ready.

Alternative Decklist

While the first list revolves around tokens and infinite card-draw combos, this one focuses on artifacts and plenty of control tools - just how blue Magic Symbol u decks like it.

With this list, you'll create artifact tokens and use passive effects to make more and more of them for very little effort.

You'll also take advantage of a few blue Magic Symbol u copy spells, including Echocasting Symposium, Flash Photography, Irenicus's Vile Duplication, Multiversal Recruitment, Quantum Misalignment, and Relm's Sketching.

Final Thoughts

Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards has a lot of potential. He could become that commander nobody wants to face in casual matches. At the same time, he's a fun option that can entertain everyone, from beginners to experienced players.

He's versatile enough to see play in any power level or bracket, including the one that best suits your playgroup, even if you don't ignore everything he can do.

As we've seen, you can also use some alternative win conditions with him if things get out of hand and you draw far more cards than you should.
