With Planeswalkers at its center, Reality Fracturelink outside website brought a strategy back to Standard after several seasons away: Superfriends. The archetype uses a large number of Planeswalkers to control the battlefield and generate value for each turn they remain in play.

The strategy is powered largely by Way of the Pyromancer and Gideon's Memorial for ramp, alongside payoffs such as the new Ajani Unrelenting, which turns every Planeswalker activation into more power on the battlefield. Add a Boros Midrange/Control shell with cheap removal and sweepers, and it has become one of this season’s standout decks!

The Decklist

A Planeswalker deck needs plenty of Planeswalkers, each with a distinct role.

Ajani, Outland Chaperone is the cheapest in the list. It protects itself with blockers and helps control the board with removal. Chandra, Torch of Defiance ramps, generates card advantage, answers threats and has a finisher that can win games on its own.

Elspeth, Storm Slayer and Ajani Unrelenting work together to snowball our advantage. Elspeth doubles the tokens created by any source, while Ajani creates a 2/2 token whenever we activate a Planeswalker ability. Each can also help keep the battlefield clear on its own.

Way of the Pyromancer and Gideon's Memorial ramp us on turn two so we can play Planeswalkers sooner. They remain useful later in the game, including by boosting our tokens’ power.

Our card-advantage engines and win conditions benefit from a clear battlefield, so a full set of Erode answers any creature or Planeswalker as cheaply as possible. It can be a little weak if Landfall gets out of hand quickly, but it handles most other problems.

Get Lost answers creatures, Planeswalkers and enchantments such as Sapling Nursery, while Aang's Iceberg adds another flexible removal option. Solitary Cell handles smaller threats and lets us discard Planeswalkers and other legendary cards to filter our hand. Lightning Helix offers flexibility and some extra breathing room against Aggro.

The sweeper mix can vary, but I like an even split or a 3-1 split between Day of Judgment and Settle the Wreckage. Many decks today can avoid committing fully to a wide board and play effectively around Wreckage, so I run three copies of Day of Judgment as an unconditional answer.

To keep cards flowing, we use the synergy between Fountainport and Caretaker's Talent. Talent also turns our tokens into serious threats in the late game.

Cori Mountain Monastery exiles cards from the top of our library that we can play. Paired with Sunken Citadel, it gives us extra “draws” at a lower cost without relying entirely on Chandra or combinations of Talent with Fountainport or other cards.

Spellementals and Prowess remain very popular on the ranked ladder. Since most of our resources come from permanents on the battlefield, we can use High Noon without much trouble to disrupt our opponent’s sequencing. Rest in Peace also comes in against Spellementals, though Reanimator is its main target.

Voice of Victory helps “ensure” a Planeswalker resolves on our turn, and opponents cannot always answer it easily once it is on the battlefield. Authority of the Consuls comes in against Prowess and Red Aggro, particularly to shut down Slickshot Show-Off and other creatures with haste. It can also come in against Jeskai Synthesizer to prevent a “combo” with The Fire Crystal.

Fire Magic clears the board of small creatures. It is ideal against Lifegain, Dimir Midrange and Lizards, and has some use against Azorius Momo and Jund Sacrifice.

Abrade comes in against Jeskai Artifacts, Jund Sacrifice and Boros Dwarves. It also supplements our spot removal against Red Aggro and Prowess. If you want to focus more on those matchups and less on artifact-based decks, swap it for more copies of Lightning Helix.
