About Dissection Practice

Dissection Practice, Instant, designed by Steve Ellis first released in Apr, 2026 in the set Secrets of Strixhaven.

**Dissection Practice** fits best in a black-based aggro or tempo deck—especially ones that care about small combat advantages, sacrifice synergies, or life-drain triggers (such as Aristocrats-style decks or low-curve creature decks in Limited). The card’s flexibility is its main strength: it can swing combat by pumping your creature while shrinking an opponent’s, trigger lifegain/life-loss synergies, or finish off a 1-toughness creature. However, in most Constructed formats it would likely be outclassed by more efficient options such as **Fatal Push** (far stronger removal), **Disfigure** (clean -2/-2 at instant speed), **Vampiric Rites**–style synergy cards, or even **Drain Life** variants that scale better; even **Tragic Slip** or **Cut Down** would usually provide more impact. While the versatility is nice and it could be solid in Limited, it probably wouldn’t see meaningful competitive Constructed play unless the format strongly rewards small stat adjustments and incremental life
