The Duel Commander format committee announced the banning of three commanders: Spider-Man 2099, Lumra, Bellow of the Woods and The Fantasticar. The changes take effect immediately and aim to preserve the diversity of the format, which currently features a healthy Metagame with a wide variety of competitive archetypes.

All three cards were banned exclusively as commanders, remaining legal in the "99" of decks. There were no changes to the format's global rules.

According to the official announcement, the three commanders share a common trait: each places significant pressure on the Metagame and reduces the space available for certain competitive strategies. The decisions do not reflect a format in poor health, but rather an effort to maintain a rich and diverse environment.

" title="Spider-Man 2099">Spider-Man 2099* had been establishing itself as one of the most represented decks since Relic Fest 2025, remaining one of the top competitors. Although the deck has identifiable weaknesses, the decision is not based solely on win rate or raw power. The committee highlighted that the commander's growing presence in tournaments gradually influenced how players build and prepare their decks. The commander's combo threat, accessible through a limited number of cards and reinforced by the command zone, regularly forces opponents to keep instant-speed removal available.

The announcement states that, in many situations, a single answer may not be enough, leading some decks to include more interaction than they normally would. The main concern is the impact on decks that seek to win through the board and the combat phase, especially aggressive or midrange strategies based on small and medium-sized creatures. "The health of a format cannot be measured solely by the number of different decks represented at the top tables. It is also necessary to consider which types of strategies are able to remain competitive," the text states.

Lumra, Bellow of the Woods established itself as one of the most powerful decks in the format, with a game plan based on fast and highly consistent combo sequences. The announcement highlights that the deck's speed, combined with how consistently it accesses its game plan, leaves little room for strategies that do not have the appropriate interaction. The deck's resilience is identified as an aggravating factor: even when an opponent interrupts an initial combo attempt, Lumra has numerous ways to rebuild its advantage. To effectively combat the deck, players need to combine different types of interaction: graveyard hate, answers capable of dealing with lands, and ways to prevent Lumra from reaching the battlefield.

This combination of highly specific answers represents a significant restriction on deckbuilding. Lumra's ability to be recast repeatedly from the command zone increases the pressure even further.

The Fantasticar posted very strong results since entering the format, quickly establishing itself as a particularly powerful strategy. The commander's game plan involves a fast and highly consistent combo, capable of being activated from the third turn onward frequently, and in some cases as early as the second turn. To contain The Fantasticar, players need very specific answers whose effectiveness is significantly reduced in other matchups.

In addition to its power and consistency, the committee expressed concern about the nature of the games generated by the commander, which often leave little room for meaningful strategic decisions. "They can be decided in less than ten minutes, with the outcome largely determined by whether or not the opponent has access to the few interactions capable of interrupting its plan," the announcement states. The text concludes that "this type of gameplay experience is not aligned with the experience we want to promote in Duel Commander."
