Introduction“If you let me play with your toys, I’m definitely gonna break them.”- She-Hulk, Jennifer WaltersWhen we say Marvel heroes have invaded Magic: the Gathering, we mean all of them.Forget the Avengers from the MCU films: they're just the tip of the iceberg. This set gave plenty of lesser-known heroes their time in the spotlight. One of them is Jennifer Walters, also known as The Sensational She-Hulk, a powerful legendary creature worthy of her equally formidable comic-book counterpart. In this article, you'll find two decklists with this gamma-powered heroine. One uses control pieces to slow opponents down while you build your board. The other takes a more relaxed approach with Selesnya +1/+1 counters and a hero subtheme. As always, let's start with our commander.Commander: Jennifer Walters (The Sensational She-Hulk)“The people you fight to protect sometimes fear and hate you. And it's the hardest part because sometimes to protect what you love, you have to walk away from it.”- She-Hulk, Jennifer WaltersA talented lawyer and Bruce Banner's cousin, Jennifer Walters was exposed to gamma radiation after receiving a blood transfusion from him. That marked the beginning of her superhero career. Though she isn't as strong as Bruce, she quickly learned to control her abilities and keep her head clear in her giant green form.She-Hulk is in Selesnya colors. Her front side costs 2 mana, stops opponents from casting spells during your turn, and has her signature transformation ability.Once transformed, she becomes The Sensational She-Hulk, a formidable 6/6 creature with Reach and Trample. She keeps that first passive ability and gains another: once each turn, when one of your creatures is dealt damage, you may have She-Hulk deal that much damage to any target.Slowing Down Your OpponentsEven if Jennifer Walters enters play on turn two, you'll need time to transform her and do something relevant on the board with her.We decided to add a few cards that slow your opponents down and buy you that time. You can see we added familiar pieces that make creatures and/or artifacts enter tapped, including Blind Obedience, Thalia, Heretic Cathar, Manglehorn, and Authority of the Consuls. Archon of Emeria also slows down opponents by making their nonbasic lands enter tapped. You'll shut down tutors with Aven Mindcensor and counter spells opponents cast for free with Boromir, Warden of the Tower and Vexing Bauble. But there are a few more tricks up our sleeve!Against Reanimator decks and similar strategies, Soulless Jailer, Grafdigger's Cage, and Rest in Peace are the stars. And when the Storm player starts getting cheeky, Deafening Silence, Silence, and Orim's Chant shine.Want to tax enemy spells? God-Pharaoh's Statue does that and makes your opponents lose life on your end step.Once the game is locked down and your commander has transformed, you can focus on big attacks or even use Approach of the Second Sun as a win condition.ManaNaturally, we had to cover mana and ramp. We've given priority to cards that won't disrupt your own board and allow you to move a bit faster:Yasharn, Implacable Earth both ramps, as it fetches a Forest or Plains for you when it enters, and slows the game down. It stops players from paying life or sacrificing nonland permanents to cast spells or activate abilities.ProtectionPlaying a deck with an obvious target on the battlefield isn't easy, but white offers us plenty of ways to protect our Jennifer.Another card from this set and an occasional comic-book ally, Storm, Windrider stops Flying creatures from attacking you or blocking your creatures. The angelic duo Shalai, Voice of Plenty and Sigarda, Font of Blessings are a great way to protect your life points and your board. There's also the ever-reliable Ghostly Prison, which encourages opponents to attack someone else. And, of course, we added answers to board wipes: Clever Concealment, Dawn's Truce, and Heroic Intervention.Besides protecting your creatures, Akroma's Will is an excellent way to end the game with a powerful attack.RemovalsCommander is full of interactions, and a few troublesome cards can derail your strategy before it gets going. Don't worry: that's what removal is for!The key to removal is knowing when to use it. If taking out a single creature, artifact, or enchantment won't be enough, turn to the board wipes in the list:Overload is what makes Winds of Abandon shine. The more colors a Commander deck plays, the less basic lands it tends to play, so this spell can easily create a lot of problems for your opponents.Final DecklistHere's our first build for Jennifer Walters:Alternative DecklistThis alternative list is more beginner-friendly. It leans into the aggressive +1/+1 counter strategy that's already quite common in Selesnya decks. This version also uses a hero subtheme and combat effects so you can feel as if you're fighting a battle for New York City alongside a few Marvel heroes. We added iconic MTG cards like Abzan Battle Priest, Abzan Falconer, Apex Altisaur, Mikaeus, the Lunarch, Stuffy Doll, and Kogla, the Titan Ape to the new Hulk, Strongest There Is, Invisible Woman, Sue Storm, Hercules, Olympian Hero, and Doc Samson, Super Psychiatrist. Black Panther, Most Dangerous, Agent Phil Coulson, and Captain America, Super-Soldier are also included. You'll find spells and effects that spread +1/+1 counters across your board, including Felidar Retreat, Sphere Grid, Innkeeper's Talent, Training Regimen, Abandoned Air Temple, and The Great Henge.Final ThoughtsIt's easy to see why this commander stands out. Her passive ability is particularly strong when you're facing 3 opponents waiting for the right moment to remove your key piece.By shutting down that interaction, she buys you time to predict what they'll do and plan your own moves. What do you think?
