Ixalan is een levendig en avontuurlijk vliegtuig in Magic: The Gathering, gekenmerkt door zijn weelderige jungles, oude ruïnes en een rijk tapijtwerk aan kennis rond het conflict tussen vier facties: het op dinosaurussen rijdende Sun Empire, het vampirische Legion of Dusk, de meervolk van de River Heralds, en de schatzoekende piraten van de Brazen Coalition. Het verhaal van de set ontvouwt zich terwijl deze facties strijden om de controle over de legendarische stad Orazca, waarvan wordt aangenomen dat deze een enorme macht heeft en de sleutel is tot hun respectievelijke lot. Mechanisch gezien introduceert Ixalan het Explore-mechanisme, waarmee spelers de bovenste kaart van hun bibliotheek kunnen onthullen en deze in hun hand kunnen stoppen of verbannen, waardoor de thema's verkenning en ontdekking worden versterkt. Bovendien bevat de set tribale synergieën, vooral met dinosaurussen, meervolk en vampieren, waardoor spelers worden aangemoedigd om decks te bouwen die de diverse en dynamische aard van deze boeiende wereld weerspiegelen.
