Pioneer, a non-rotating format starting from Return to Ravnica onwards, will return to the competitive Magic: The Gathering circuit in 2027. The announcement was made by Blake Rasmussen, public relations representative for Wizards of the Coast, during the WeeklyMTG program on May 19th, where he and Carmen Klomparens, from play design, discussed the latest Banned & Restricted announcement.

According to Rasmussen, it's not yet possible to say exactly when or how the format will return, as planning for the 2027 competitive season is still underway. However, he stated that he has already spoken with the organized play team and that they are working for Pioneer to be a part of the upcoming season.

The last competitive Pioneer season took place in 2024. Since then, the format has gone from one of Magic's premier competitive formats to being on the fringes of local tournaments along with Magic Online Leagues, Challenges, and MTGArena ranked play. With this decision, 2027 will mark the format's return after two years without official high-level events.
