The Duel Commander format committee has announced the unbanning of three commanders: Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Najeela, the Blade-Blossom, and Winota, Joiner of Forces. The three cards had been suspended for between five and seven years and are now legal as commanders again.
The three unbans take effect immediately. The announcement notes that, in Najeela's case, the return will be on a trial basis.

Emry, Lurker of the Loch was banned in November 2019, less than two months after its release. At the time, artifact strategies dominated the metagame, with cards like Mox Opal and Lotus Petal still legal, along with a slower environment that let Emry generate massive advantage early in the game. Since then, Mox Opal and Lotus Petal have been banned, reducing the ability for abusive openings. The format has also become faster and more powerful, and artifact strategies have lost ground.
Today, there is more cheap graveyard and artifact hate. According to the announcement, Emry was never tested in a stable environment, and its ban was largely preventive. Seven years later, the card is no longer considered a power outlier.

Najeela, the Blade-Blossom was banned in 2019, in a context where extremely fast combo decks or explosive aggro dominated. Najeela was innovative in providing access to five colors for only three mana, with a single colored pip, which was considered a structural anomaly. The ban was largely preventive. Currently, having access to five colors is no longer a problematic structural advantage, and the average power level of commanders has increased.
The announcement states that Najeela may strengthen the diversity of aggressive strategies, which currently occupy a fragile spot in the metagame, and that its game plan is interactive and exposed to answers.

Winota, Joiner of Forces was banned in 2021 for being considered oppressive, applying pressure as early as the first few turns, and demanding an immediate answer before combat. Since then, the overall quality of interaction has improved significantly, with cheap removal (cost two or less) present in most competitive archetypes. Winota also requires deckbuilding restrictions (many creatures, little room for interaction), making the strategy linear and predictable. The overall power level of Duel Commander has increased considerably since 2021, and Winota is no longer considered an outlier.
Aggressive strategies currently struggle against the rise of combo and control; Winota's return may restore some room for combat‑based archetypes.
