IntroductionNow that The Hobbit, the latest MTG set, is almost here, I can finally start saying goodbye to Marvel Super Heroes bit by bit and talk about the last relevant commanders in it.In today's article, we'll check out a pretty fun Monored list that leans quite heavily into discard effects, so common in red, and turns them into damage, which is everything this color wants. Without further ado, let's see the deck.Spider-Man, New Champion: The CommanderSpider-Man, New Champion is a 3/3 creature that costs 3 mana and has Reach. His main effect states that, whenever you discard one card or more, he deals damage according to the number of cards you discarded to any target. A Faithless Looting will deal 2 damage, while a card that discards your entire hand can remove a big creature or just hurt the opponent a lot if you target their life points. As this line of text means every time you discard something, this deck doesn't have to rely solely on wheels. Smaller loot effects are great ways to keep the commander active as well. Spells that force you to discard something to play them will result in damage before they even resolve. Like so, you can use Spider-Man as a removal in the early game and save the bigger effects for other game states, when you can get more out of them. The DeckToday's list is a Monored strategy centered around discard effects and damage. It uses loot effects to keep your hand organized and end the game when you put your damage payoff cards in play. You can spend your resources fast with this list, putting spells in your graveyard and finding new options until you manage to create a snowball effect.Discarding cards without recovering or replacing them could lead you to run out of cards too early. So, this list plays recursion, card draw, and creatures that turn discard effects into Treasures, counters, or damage.RampSol Ring is one of the most basic ways to accelerate in this list, while Ruby Medallion discounts the cost of your colored spells. Considering you'll cast 2 or 3 cards in many turns, saving 1 mana each time you play a spell is quite relevant. This way, you'll have more resources to set up other plays. The Fire Crystal also discounts the cost of red spells and gives your creatures Haste. With this card in play, Neheb, the Eternal and Anje's Ravager will create value immediately. Furthermore, its activated ability also allows you to copy one creature for 1 turn, so you can use it to copy a payoff card when you already have a lot of mana.Pyretic Ritual accelerates mana temporarily, whereas Treasonous Ogre turns life points into mana so that you can extend your turns. Neheb, the Eternal does a lot with the damage you deal before your second main phase. It essentially turns the damage you deal with your commander's ability into resources so that you can keep playing.Loot and Card DrawFaithless Looting is one of the best cards in this list. It doesn't cost a lot of mana, lets you discard 2 cards, and later on can come back into play through Flashback. Thrill of Possibility and Electric Revelation do something similar at instant speed. They allow you to deal damage with Spider-Man during another player's turn. Cathartic Reunion lets you swap 3 cards in your hand for new ones, whereas Romantic Rendezvous discards 1 and draws 2. Pirate's Pillage costs more mana, but it leaves a Treasure behind once it resolves.Big Score and Unexpected Windfall leave two Treasures behind and allow you to make cards that are a little bit useless a bit better. They get better alongside Surly Badgersaur, Containment Construct, or Monument to Endurance. Like so, discarding cards will give you other resources as well.Wheels and Big Discard EffectsBurning Inquiry can result in 3 damage and completely disrupt other players' hands. Khorvath's Fury and Shattered Perception will give you some gas, whereas Change of Fortune improves as you discard and cast cards during each turn.Decaying Time Loop lets you discard your entire hand and draw the same number of cards. It can also get back from the graveyard through Retrace. This is really great considering this list often gives you too many unnecessary lands and you usually want to find a way to use them to trigger your commander again. Will of the Jeskai is one of the most important cards when you want to end the game. With your commander in play, you may swap your hand for 5 cards and give Flashback to the instants and sorceries in your graveyard. Like so, any big discard effect you use will instantly set up the next sequence.Reusing CardsContainment Construct lets you play cards you discarded during that turn. Like so, your loot effects won't just lead you to waste resources. Currency Converter lets you save some cards for later and turn them into Treasures or creatures. Library of Leng allows you to control where most of your discarded hand will go, and it's an extremely sophisticated choice for this deck.Brass's Tunnel-Grinder swaps any number of cards for even more cards, and, after you stack some counters on it, it turns into a land that can create value. Its first side is already excellent in this list because the first time it enters play it can already deal a lot of damage with Spider-Man and completely rearrange your hand.Matzalantli, the Great Door filters cards and allows you to turn your graveyard into ramp. Shadow of the Goblin lets you loot at the beginning of the first main phase and also deals damage when you play lands or cast spells from outside your hand. This interacts with Flashback, Retrace, and other effects in this list.Discard PayoffMagmakin Artillerist is another source of damage, as it hits each opponent as you discard cards. Glint-Horn Buccaneer is similar, but it also draws and discards cards during combat.Surly Badgersaur turns the different cards you discard into mana, tokens, or counters. Lady Spider, Maybelle Reilly puts counters on Spiders whenever you discard a card. Like so, your cards will grow as you do what this list already wants you to.Irencrag Pyromancer rewards you for drawing your second card each turn with more damage, which is easy to do with this many loot effects. Monument to Endurance rewards you in 3 different ways. It draws a card, creates a Treasure, or makes each opponent lose life points. You may use each option once per turn.Dealing More DamageTorbran, Thane of Red Fell makes each red source of damage even more powerful and improves even the smallest loot effects. Solphim, Mayhem Dominus doubles the damage you deal outside of combat and gives you a real way to win by swapping your hand with new cards. The Rollercrusher Ride works as removal when it enters play, and with Delirium, it also doubles the damage you deal from all sources. Like so, you'll once again be able to multiply Spider-Man and his payoffs. Chandra's Incinerator gets cheaper after you deal damage and allows you to turn this damage into creature removal.Spellslinger SupportAshling, Flame Dancer and Electro, Assaulting Battery reward you for playing many instants and sorceries and allow you to create value with this deck through another way. Longshot, Rebel Bowman discounts the cost of noncreature spells and deals damage to each opponent when you cast one of them, so it is helpful even when you're not discarding cards. Primal Amulet discounts the cost of your cards and then lets you copy important ones. Artist's Talent gives you the opportunity to loot, discount costs, and deal damage as it levels up. It is great at several points of the game. How to Play ItA great opening hand for this deck includes 3 lands, some acceleration, and at least one card draw and discard spell. Spider-Man doesn't cost a lot of mana, but you don't need to put him in play if you can't activate him. Ideally, you should cast him when you can already loot or when there is a creature in play you want to remove. In the first few turns, you must set up your mana base and put some payoff card in play. Currency Converter, Containment Construct, and Monument to Endurance make your next discard effects create even more value, whereas Ruby Medallion and The Fire Crystal set up bigger sequences. In the mid-game, smaller loot effects will help you control creatures and rearrange your hand. You don't need to spend a wheel to deal 4 or 5 damage when you don't have a way to multiply it. Oftentimes, you're better off keeping Decaying Time Loop, Change of Fortune, or Will of the Jeskai for when you can also fill your graveyard by discarding cards and find your next strategy. When it's time to end the game, try to combine a big discard effect with Solphim, Mayhem Dominus, Torbran, Thane of Red Fell, Magmakin Artillerist, or Monument to Endurance. Will of the Jeskai's Flashback and Decaying Time Loop's Retrace allow you to keep playing after you discard your cards, and, because of them, you won't have to rely on cards that you can only activate once.Final WordsThough we had already received an entire Spider-Man set, Marvel Super Heroes brought us another Spidey. Fortunately, The Hobbit is just around the corner. I say that because I believe its aesthetic fits MTG a bit better, as it leans more towards medieval fantasy. There is just one last commander from this Marvel set I'd like to discuss, but I will save that for the next article. What do you think?
