Introduction

“These surface dwellers feel safe with their feet on dry land. Let us remind them why they fear the deep water.”

- Namor

Who doesn't love a good old kindred deck?

Built around a single creature type, these decks are hugely popular with beginners who are still learning the mechanics and interactions in Commander.

When the Marvel Super Heroeslink outside website set was announced, we expected to get some new hero commanders, but the Merfolk caught us by surprise.

Welcome to our Namor, Atlantean King deck guide, featuring two lists: one packed with instants and sorceries so you can take over the game with a board full of Merfolk, and a second built around enchantments that will create even more of these aquatic creatures.

Let's start by getting to know our commander!

Commander: Namor, Atlantean King

“Now watch as I do what you could not.”

- Namor

Known as the Sub-Mariner, Namor is the ruler of Atlantis and has been both an enemy and an ally of the surface world in different circumstances.

The Namor we chose for this article is in Azorius Magic Symbol wMagic Symbol u colors, a combination known for its access to strong removals and protection. In these colors, your main game plan will keep moving as if there are no obstacles in your way.

This is excellent because whenever you cast a noncreature spell, Namor creates a 1/1 Merfolk token. When he attacks a player with more life points than you, other creatures attacking that player get +2/+0 until the end of the turn.

The best thing about this effect is that it interacts with noncreature spells, so we can build him around any theme we want: artifacts, enchantments, spells, or even Planeswalkers (for the more unusual players).

Buffs

Whatever theme you choose, one thing is certain: you will need specific buffs for your Merfolk tokens.

Our selection includes:

Renewed Solidarity is a gamble that paid off in testing.

In addition to the +1/+0 buff for creatures of your chosen type, it has an ability that triggers at your end step and copies every token you control that entered the battlefield that turn.

Our knight, Vodalian Wave-Knight, puts +1/+1 counters on every other Merfolk you control when you draw a card, which should make your board a lot more powerful at once.

Vodalian Hexcatcher gives your Merfolk tokens a "new" role: you can sacrifice them to counter noncreature spells unless their controller pays 1.

Anointed Procession is not a buff, but it will fill your board rather fast and allow you to deal even more damage.

With it, any effect that would create one or more tokens for you creates twice that many instead.

Copies

Having one Namor, Atlantean King is great, but imagine having two on the battlefield under your control. Or two copies of Belladonna Took, Attuma, Atlantean Warlord, Vodalian Wave-Knight, and other creatures in this list? These cards make that possible!

Released in the Marvel Super Heroeslink outside website set, Irma, Part-Time Mutant triggers at the beginning of combat on your turn and becomes a copy of another creature you control while keeping her original name. She also gets a +1/+1 counter when she does!

Looking beyond creatures, Quantum Misalignment creates a copy of Namor and also creates a token when you cast it. It also has Rebound, so it will return on your next turn.

Card Draw

What is a new Azorius Magic Symbol wMagic Symbol u deck if not an opportunity to find out how many efficient, low-mana card-draw spells we can fit into a single Commander deck with at most 99 cards?

It is rare for me to add Opt, Ponder, and Brainstorm to the same list, but this one brings all three together and also plays Harmonized Trio, a Merfolk that uses your tokens to prepare itself and activate its Brainstorm.

Kindred Discovery is a classic card in kindred decks, and its card-draw effect works with tokens too.

Although their relationship in the comics is quite complicated, the Richards family helps Namor considerably with card draw in MTG. Young Valeria also allows you to create Merfolk for less mana.

Protection

A deck with plenty of answers and creatures tends to draw unwanted attention in casual Commander. So, you will need some spells to stay in the game.

They say the worst Akroma's Will is a defensive one. In other words, the one you cast to survive a board wipe or similar effect. While ideally you'll cast this card and end the game, it is still a decent way to protect yourself.

Though it is not exactly protection, Reconnaissance can save a creature when you attack without realizing that the defending player can kill a creature you want to keep.

In addition to making your spells indestructible until the end of the turn, you can cast Ultimate Magic: Holy from exile to prevent all damage that would be dealt to you that turn.

Main List

This is the final list:

Alternative List

In Commander, the beloved ruler of Atlantis, Namor, Atlantean King, has proven he is a great Merfolk commander.

So why not focus on them, cutting back on the all-purpose instants and sorceries to add more kindred options?

Unlike our first list, this one plays some Merfolk that actually focus on their own creature type.

Loading icon

The first list plays non-Merfolk creatures, but in this one, the beloved Summon: Leviathan will bounce everything that is not a Kraken, Leviathan, Merfolk, Octopus, or Serpent. It is a perfect fit.

We also added kindred sorceries. The best is Aquitect's Will, which turns a target land into an Island and allows you to set up an unblockable attack with Master of the Pearl Trident.

Artifacts and enchantments themed around these creatures also see play in this version.

It may be less powerful than the main one, but it will be just as fun for Merfolk fans.

Final Thoughts

In Commander, Namor, Atlantean King stands out as a fun, welcoming commander for anyone looking to get started in the format or even in MTG itself.

With a simple token effect and an ability that buffs them when he attacks, Namor is a villain who can steal our hearts and earn his place at casual tables.
