Wizards of the Coast announced this Monday the creation of Ranked Brawl for MTG Arena. The new competitive mode will be available starting June 23, 2026, in both the "Ranked" tab and the "Brawl" tab of the client.
Ranked Brawl follows the same basic rules as traditional Brawl: 100‑card decks, one legendary commander, a one‑copy limit per card (except basic lands), and color identity. Players start with 25 life.
Ten commanders are banned at launch:

The team in charge stated that, unlike unranked Brawl, Ranked Brawl does not ban cards from the "99". According to data analysis, individual cards like Mana Drain or Noble Hierarch do not impact win rates nearly as significantly as commanders do. If issues arise, Wizards says it may ban cards from the 99 in the future, but there is no evidence to justify that at launch.
For future bans in Ranked Brawl (and also in Unranked), players will receive wildcards at one wildcard for each copy of a banned card in their collection. There will be no refund for the ten initially banned commanders.
Traditional (unranked) Brawl will remain available. Wizards expects competitive players to migrate to Ranked Brawl, making room for more casual and creative matches in Unranked. Matchmaking for Unranked Brawl will continue to be tuned to pair commanders of similar strength. The company intends to keep experimenting to improve the friendly experience.
