In this article, we will discuss the construction of the Rakdos chaos deck, its strategies and finally, we will explore the upgrade options that we have available to enhance its functioning.

Understanding the Deck

On Kaldheim, the demons of Immersturm are ruthless Viking raiders with a never-before-seen thirst for destruction. Ever since the gods cast the runes that imprisoned them in the realm, rival demonic jarls and their legions have been fighting steadily and furiously in the fields of Elskul.

Kardur was a noble Viking leader known for his strength and intelligence. As one of the fiercest and most ruthless Jarls, Kardur made the demons on the battlefield feel true terror in their hearts.

Due to this influence, the other Jarls banded together, probably for the first time in Immesturm's history. They fought together to seal Kardur beneath the earth and thus stop the much-feared demon.

However, slowly, the imprisoned legendary Jarl makes his way back. And his goal now is to get to the surface so that Immesturm can know hell again.

Kardur has a very interesting and fun ability to explore at first. When it enters the battlefield, until your next turn, creatures your opponents control attack each combat if able, and attack a player other than you.

However, the key point of this ability is that even if the creature enters after Kardur, and it is able to attack, it will attack another player than you. This is due to its text of entering the battlefield specifying your opponents, thus affecting creatures they control.

Based on that, the line followed here is to force combat between your opponents and interact from there. Resources that empower creatures that attack other players are key in this deck.

Thanks to these features and the goad mechanic, it is possible to develop an aggressive yet controlling play style.

Upgrades Guide

Chaos Incarnate must live up to its name: the Chaos. Forced combat between your opponents and take advantage of the few blockers that will appear along the way.

The strategy will be focused on making it more advantageous to attack your opponents than you, even if it is forcibly, with cards that will benefit your opponents, but you at the same time.

The changes made here are in line with the deck's theme, with the objective of intensifying attacks and making the game become a real Immersturm war zone.

Manabase

The deck has many basic lands, while most non-basic lands are tapped. The idea of the following replacements is to filter them a bit and add some versatility.

Sanctum of Eternity, despite generating only colorless mana, its effect is great because of Kardur's effect. You can always go back and recast your commander, ensuring you won't be attacked until your next turn.

Maestros Theater and Riveteers Overlook are great additions since, they fetch and also offer a small lifegain. Something interesting about the lands that allow you to search for another is precisely to reduce the total amount of land in the deck, thus improving your draws on later turns.

Tainted Peak and Shadowblood Ridge are suitable options for cheap mana correction. And last, but not least, the Tramway Station, which despite entering tapped, offers an extra draw.

Mana Rocks

The accelerators present in the deck are the most used in Commander, among them Sol Ring, Signets (Arcane Signet and Rakdos Signet), Talisman of Indulgence and Wayfarer's Bauble .

Worn Powerstone can leave to make room for Mind Stone, which enters untapped and offers a draw in times of need. Another addition is the Fellwar Stone as a cheap mana rock.

Coveted Jewel is a card that is well suited to its theme, as it generates three mana and gives you three cards. However, the power of greed can turn against you and in a bad situation, an opponent can draw three cards and gain three mana. It is interesting that you have cards that help the opponent and you simultaneously, and not in separate situations.

Combat Interactions

The deck's strategy is to use and abuse cards that encourage your opponents to attack each other instead of you.

We see cards like Brash Taunter that redirects damage to an opponent and Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs that generates a lot of value for you with 3/3 ogre tokens. Even though creatures can attack you, it's more flashy if they gain an effect if they attack someone else.

So, here we decided to add cards with similar effects to Kardur and Geode Rager, for example. Goad is essential in this deck to keep the battlefield buzzing at all times.

Thinking about giving your opponents advantage and resources, but also thinking about you, we added Curse of Disturbance, Curse of Opulence, Frenzied Saddlebrute, Frontier Warmonger, Slaughter Specialist, Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor and other Goad cards.

Here are the cards that go out are due to their high cost or because they don't have as synergistic effect as the ones that come in. For example, Guttersnipe and Thermo-Alchemist are creatures that rely on instant and/or sorceries to deal damage. At the same mana value, we have respectively Shiny Impetus and Slaughter Specialist, which will grant you treasure tokens and also a creature that increases its power for each creature an opponent control that dies.

Scythe Specter has a high cost and needs to deal combat damage for its ability to work. Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor is a great replacement as it has a lower cost, and even if it is targeted to be removed, it is possible that your opponents will think a bit before dealing with it.

Overall, Goad is there to benefit you at all times like with Agitator Ant, Disrupt Decorum and Parasitic Impetus. However, the most important thing to understand from the Chaos Incarnate deck is that you generate enough value when it's just you and an opponent at the table, as stoking in a one-on-one scenario results in them finally being able to attack you.

Card Advantage and Interactions with the Commander

It is always important to keep cards in hand for possible answers, and we can achieve this goal by adding cards that will give you this feature. We have additions like Morbid Opportunist and Harvester of Souls.

In addition to them, we also have Emberwilde Captain, which adds Monarch to the game. Despite being the Monarch attracting attention in games, Emberwilde Captain has a consequence for anyone who tries to take the crown from you.

It's also interesting to bring cards that will make your commander come back as soon as he dies, such as Undying Malice, or even means to copy him, like with Flamerush Rider, to replay his ETB trigger.

It's important to remember the Legends Rule, where before any ability or spell resolves, you must choose which of the same legendary creatures you want to keep, and then sacrifice the other. Once this is done, Kardur's effect resolves, and then the conflict on the battlefield begins again.

The important thing is to make the ability to enter the battlefield work again, and that doesn't just apply to the commander, as we have great targets included in the deck like Combustible Gearhulk, Sepulchral Primordial and Solemn Simulacrum.

With that in mind, we have two more important additions: Golden Argosy and Conjurer’s Closet. Both have a "blink" mechanic (make the creature leave and return from the battlefield) and add a lot to the cards mentioned above.

Final Considerations

This deck is aimed at the chaos deployed on the battlefield at all times. You can trust that your games will always be a different way, and that will give you the expected fun of the strategy of opponents attacking each other.

Despite goad being a recent ability, it has received a lot of support in recent releases and thanks to that we can have a list option like this, which can even be improved more and more and in several different ways. In a less budget upgrade line, we find cards like Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant and Sword of Hearth and Home, for example.

However, if planting the seed of chaos is not your thing, it is worth checking the other lists of another five deckslink outside website.

Also, some of the other decks like Grave Danger, with Gisa and Geralflink outside website also had an upgrades guide here at Cards Realm!
