Multiverse of Madness

Greetings, Legacy community! It is time to go through the mess that Jace has made of the Multiverse. Reality Fracturelink outside website takes us into a world with multiple realities and alternative versions of iconic cards. Let's see what this set has in store for this format.

Mechanics

Our reviews always begin with a rundown of the new rules, courtesy of our esteemed house judge Antonio Carlos. His article on the new mechanics is always excellent: Reality Fracture Mechanics Explained by a Judgelink outside website.

The new mechanics are Empower Jace and Heartwood Tokens. Empower Jace is somewhat similar to Amass: if you do not control a Jace Token, it creates one with a number of counters equal to the Empower value. If you already have one of these tokens, it gives the token Loyalty counters equal to the Empower value instead. Heartwood tokens, meanwhile, are artifacts that can be tapped to create green or red mana, and several cards in this set create them. Prepare has also returned as one of the main mechanics in this set.

With that out of the way, it is time to review the cards.

White

Ajani Resolute

Loading icon

Two-mana Planeswalkers will always draw attention because they are not common. Ajani could grow quickly with the Boros Energy core.

Enlightened Confidant

Loading icon

This White Dark Confidant looks designed to see play with Guide of Souls and Ocelot Pride. Boros/Mardu Energy is rising in the format and could very well play this card.

Flickering Hound

Loading icon

This looks like an excellent addition to Recruiter of the Guard's arsenal. The potential to string together a chain of triggered abilities is real in Death & Taxes.

Guiding Hydra

Loading icon

This is an option for decks that can build wide boards. Hydra can either be a sizable creature when you draw it off the top or a way to turn a horde of creatures into significant threats.

Liliana the Faultless

Loading icon

Liliana is one of the many cards in this set centered around life gain and can also protect your cards. But I do not know whether she could replace Mother of Runes.

Loyal Tutor

Loading icon

A 1-mana tutor is always noteworthy in Legacy, and Loyal Tutor could be the missing piece that Super Friends needs to become a competitive deck.

Refute Destiny

Loading icon

This is an interesting sideboard option that interacts with both sides of Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student.

Blue

Jace’s Machinations

Loading icon

This card can also be great in a Planeswalker-focused deck (Super Friends).

Chandra, Chill of Compliance

Loading icon

We usually start considering Planeswalkers in Legacy when they cost 3 mana or less. Chandra does quite a lot: she draws cards, ramps, protects herself, and has a devastating Ultimate. There is potential here!

Geist of Saint Thalia

Loading icon

This card's ability is very powerful and, unlike Baral, Chief of Compliance, affects artifacts, enchantments, and Planeswalkers.

Samut, Tyrant of Naktamun

Loading icon

Samut, one of the most talked about cards in this set, essentially allows you to ignore your opponent's attempts to interact with you through spells. Decks that rely on crucial spells may have a clear path to do whatever they want with Samut on the battlefield.

Seasoned Cryomancer

Loading icon

This Blue Seasoned Pyromancer is great at winning races involving life totals and creates extra value even after it dies.

Theorist’s Proxy

Loading icon

Proxy is an interesting way to make sure a key spell (Show and Tell, for example) resolves. It also leaves behind a Jace Token.

Black

Dark Matter Manipulator

Loading icon

Manipulator will essentially represent extra copies of Stitcher’s Supplier in Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis decks, and can eventually deal a lot of damage.

Darklight Phoenix

Loading icon

Once you notice this Phoenix checks for creatures on both sides of the battlefield, and you realize that there are several efficient ways to bring it back: through Smallpox, Devastating Summons, or Force of Rage.

Extrapolate the Impossible

Loading icon

A 2-mana tutor that puts a card into your hand will always have potential in combos, like Burning Wish, for instance. Extrapolate the Impossible needs a bit of redundancy to work but is very efficient at what it does.

Liliana the Repentant

Loading icon

This is another option for Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis decks.

Multiply by Zero

Loading icon

This is another conditional 2-mana black removal among many.

Sanctum Lurker

Loading icon

What a unique card! Keeping Planeswalkers alive at 0 Loyalty is an interesting novelty and can create some very unusual situations. Planeswalker-centric decks will certainly take a look at Sanctum Lurker.

Vraska’s Final Mercy

Loading icon

This looks like excellent removal for Monoblack decks, where it will create value with the Jace token even when it has no target.

Red

Pompous Battlemage

Loading icon

Red Prowess always seems to be on the verge of becoming viable. Battlemage gives it more material to work with.

Samut, Hazoret’s Champion

Loading icon

Samut looks very cool for Human decks. It could even see play in Red Stompy.

Stingcaster Mage

Loading icon

Snapcaster Mage still sees play from time to time, but since Stingcaster offers this effect in another color combination, I can see some aggressive decks being interested in it.

Green

Carnivorous Cultivator

Loading icon

Lands might be able to use this card really well. Recursion fits this deck perfectly, and it can get something out of putting a Land of your choice into the graveyard, both through Cultivator itself and Life from the Loam.

Marwyn, the Preserver

Loading icon

Lands and other Dark Depths decks can also get interested in this card. Green Sun’s Zenith could become an option for these decks.

Pia, Aether Ascetic

Loading icon

Pia can make Aluren-tell more redundant, as she can find both Aluren and Omniscience.

Simulacrum Shaper

Loading icon

It's Solemn Simulacrum for a full mana less. Is that enough for Legacy?

Tarmogoyf

Loading icon

Here's to what once was the most relevant creature in Legacy.

Multicolored

Avatar of Burgeoning Echoes

Loading icon

Avatar is a value engine with Fetch Lands. Some decks may use it in matchups that turn into battles of attrition.

Entrust the Spark

Loading icon

The idea behind this card is to trade a Jace token for something like Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker or similar.

Fatehold Charm

Loading icon

This Charm is incredibly versatile. It is never a dead card because it can be cycled, and it also acts as an emergency button against just about anything. It can even save a Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd from a Lightning Bolt or push through some unexpected lethal damage.

Solarium Sentry

Loading icon

If your meta is full of Burn decks, this Cat is a headache.

Solitary Cell

Loading icon

This type of effect always ends up seeing play, and we had not yet seen the option to cycle extra cards attached to this kind of card.

Stingerquill Charm

Loading icon

Versatility is nice, but the only great effect among its 3 is dealing 3 damage. The other two aren't good enough.

Theorix Charm

Loading icon

This one, on the other hand, is quite interesting, and all its modes are highly relevant.

Twinned Vision

Loading icon

We'd like to write down for the record that for 1 blue mana, this card draws 2 if you bring it back with Bilbo, Thief in the Night.

Vigorbloom Charm

Loading icon

This charm also has some interesting abilities. Charms are always better when they can turn into extra cards.

Colorless

Emrakul, the Exigent Doom

Loading icon

This new Emrakul could sit at the top of the curve in Tron decks. It can enter play earlier all by itself, and its untap effect happens even if it is countered.

Artifact

The Echoverse Fulcrum

Loading icon

If Karn, the Great Creator did not exist, we would probably ignore this card. But Karn does exist, and The Echoverse Fulcrum is excellent with it. It is a recurring way to clear board after board since it exiles itself so that you can tutor it again with Karn.

Karn, Argent Defender

Loading icon

This effect is very strong and is already on similar cards, such as Doorkeeper Thrull and Torpor Orb. Its body is fragile, though, and we'll still have to see whether shutting down artifact abilities is enough for it to replace those other cards.

Land

Theorist’s Sanctum

Loading icon

A land that we can tutor with fetch lands and creates value over drawn-out games? I believe several Control decks will be interested in playing 1 copy, even without playing any Jaces for Behold.

Endless options!

That is it for Jace's Multiverse! I think this set has quite a few cards that could interest Legacy, but no broken cards like The Fantasticar or Bilbo, Thief in the Night. I imagine that over the next few months, we will see many players testing these cards in already existing decks, but not as the foundation for any new archetype.
